Top 5 New Year’s Resolutions for Pet Parents
Beginning the new year off with intention is a great way to stay motivated throughout the entire year. So, why not start your pet off on the right paw in 2023? Improving diet, encouraging more exercise, and implementing other healthy habits can help them have a great year.
Setting pet resolutions can improve your pet’s quality of life. Here are our top five New Year’s resolutions for pet parents.
1. Play With Your Pet Regularly
Playtime is essential for pets for several reasons. Regular playtime with your pet can:
- Relieve stress and anxiety (for both of you).
- Allow you to bond and spend quality time together.
- Help your pet get the necessary exercise.
- Prevent obesity.
- Increase your pet’s happiness and mental wellness.
Additionally, playing with your pet helps burn off excess energy so they don’t get bored or destructive when left alone.
2. Walk Your Dog
Walking your dog is one of the best things you can do for their health. And it’s a great way to get fresh air and promote bonding.
- Try walking for at least 30 minutes a day. If that seems too much, work up to this goal by gradually increasing the duration of your walks.
- Take a stroll through a park or hike through a forest. Dogs love getting out into nature and experiencing different sights and smells.
- Invite a friend and their dog to join you on your walks and turn them into social (as well as physical) activities.
3. Feed Your Pet a Healthy Diet
Feeding your pet a balanced diet is essential for their health and happiness. A nutritious diet can help them feel and look better and even extend their lifespan.
It can be challenging to know if a pet food is balanced, but some critical signs of a healthy diet include:
- The food contains all essential nutrients in the right amounts—protein, fat, carbohydrates, and minerals like calcium or phosphorus.
- The nutrients come from high-quality, whole sources.
Ask your vet to recommend a food that considers your pet’s age, health, activity level, and any special needs.
4. Be Prepared for Health Care Needs and Emergencies
Keep up-to-date copies of your pet’s medical records.
Ensure you have all supplies and medications you need to take care of your pet. It’s a good idea to have a first-aid kit, including antiseptic wipes, bandages, and antibiotic ointment. Make a list of important phone numbers and keep them on hand in case of an emergency.
5. Visit Your Vet Regularly
Your veterinarian is your partner in your pet’s wellness and should be one of your first contacts with questions or concerns about them.
- Visit the vet at least once yearly for a checkup—don’t wait until there’s a problem.
- Keep your pet up to date on vaccines.
- Maintain your pet’s dental health.
Enjoy a Healthy, Happy 2023!
