Your cuddly canine has been a constant source of slobbery kisses and snuggles, and while it’s difficult to think about our pets getting sick, it’s always possible, no matter how pampered our pets might be.

At Beverly Hills Veterinary Associates, we know your dog is like family. In this blog, we share the nitty gritty on 10 common dog illnesses, so you know when it’s time to call the vet.

Common Dog Illnesses

Dogs, just like people, can be impacted by a wide range of illnesses and diseases. Here are some of the most common conditions we see in dogs:

  1. Obesity: More than 50% of dogs are overweight, according to The Association for Pet Obesity.

  3. Dental diseases: A whopping 80% of dogs over age 3 have some form of dental disease
  4. Skin problems and allergies: Allergies in dogs typically manifest as skin conditions, such as red, irritated skin or bald patches.
  5. Arthritis: Joint pain and stiffness are more common in seniors and dogs that are overweight.
  6. Heartworm disease: This is a serious illness spread by mosquitoes that affects more than 100,000 dogs every year.
  7. Parvovirus: A viral disease, canine parvovirus is highly contagious and can be fatal.
  8. Digestive disorders: Bowel obstructions, bloat, vomiting, and diarrhea are common intestinal disorders that impact dogs.
  9. Eye problems: Dogs are susceptible to cataracts, glaucoma, and conjunctivitis just like people are.
  10. Ear infections: Any dog can have an ear infection, but breeds with long, floppy ears are more susceptible.
