Tips on Giving the Best Spa Day to Your Pet
Spa days aren’t just for people! Our pets love extra pampering too, and you can elevate your regular at-home grooming to an all-out spa experience with these helpful hints from Beverly Hills Veterinary Associates.
You know your pet better than anyone, so throughout your pet’s special spa day, listen to his or her body language, and adjust your pet grooming accordingly.
First, Work Up a Sweat
Some exercise to start will help your pet burn off extra energy and be more inclined to relax while you’re doing the grooming. Indulge your pet with a stroll around the neighborhood (for dogs) or some energic play with a cherished toy (for cats).
Set the Mood
Play soft music, close the curtains, and let your pet relax in a favorite spot, such as a pet bed, couch, or pile of warm towels from the dryer.
Massage
Dogs: Begin at the top of the head and gently massage with your fingertips, making small circles as you go. Work your way down the neck and shoulders. Stay on the shoulders awhile, as this area bears a lot of weight.
Cats: Pet your cat gently from head to tail, and vary this motion with circular massage on your cat’s head and around the ears. Follow your cat’s cues and stop if he or she seems uncomfortable.
Mani-Pedi Time
Trim the tips of the nails (being extra cautious not to cut the quick) using safe, pet-specific trimmers. If you’ve never trimmed your pet’s nails before, ask your Beverly Hills Veterinary Associates doctor for a demonstration prior to your spa day. For added glam, paint your pet’s nails with nontoxic, pet-friendly polish.
Bathing
Dogs: A soothing soak in warm water with a gentle shampoo made just for dogs is a great way to reward your pooch after the pedicure. Some contain lavender or chamomile for extra calming power.
Cats: Unless your cat is exceptionally soiled, covered with fleas, or a hairless breed, you can skip this step! If you have an elderly cat who has trouble grooming, gently clean your cat using baby wipes.
The Mane Event
Carefully pat your pet dry with a towel just removed from the dryer. Gently—and slowly—brush the coat from head to tail, being mindful of tangles and sensitive areas. If your pet is accustomed to blow dryers, set it to the lowest heat setting, keep it several inches away, and don’t linger in the same spot.
You Both Deserve a Treat!
Now it’s time for a well-deserved reward, such as a spoonful of peanut butter (for dogs) or some cream cheese (for cats). And don’t forget to enjoy a treat yourself!
